Covid Hospitals cannot arbitrary deny use of mobile phones

WP 5416 of 2020: Jaimin Rajani Versus The State of West Bengal | Hon'ble High Court at Calcutta | Status: Disposed | |

In west Bengal some Covid Hospitals were not allowing patients to bring the mobile phones, even in general wards. There was no official notification banning the use of the same. Unlike other patients, people effected with the Corona Virus could not meet their family during the visiting hours, thus the phone is the only way of communicating. The patients could not also inform their family incase they were not getting proper treatment. Moreover, it may have been the dying wish of a terminally ill patient to talk to their family. Having all these issues to deal with, a PIL was filed before the Hon'ble High Court at Calcutta. The Court observed that in case Hospitals were to deny people from using mobile phones, there had to be a written reason issued by the Hospitals.
