High Court of Punjab and Haryana at Chandigarh directs authorities to keep helpline number for migrant workers functional at all times

Nirmal Gorana VS State of Haryana and others | High Court of Punjab and Haryana at Chandigarh | Status: Disposed Off | |

After the announcement of lockdown, there were bone chilling images all across the media and newspapers about distressed workers and the lakhs of migrant workers who were stranded in various parts of the country. Ever since the nationwide lockdown was imposed, these distressed workers neither had work nor proper shelter to sustain themselves. There was no option left for these migrant workers apart from walking down thousands of kilometers so at least they could reach their native places and survive themselves and their families. There were no travel facilities arranged by the authorities to send back the migrant/informal sector workers before imposing the lockdown.  A writ petition in the nature of PUBLIC INTEREST LITIGATION was filed regarding the immediate transport of stranded migrant workers across the state of Haryana and Punjab at different locations. The petition dealt with  200 migrant workers stranded at 4 different locations in Punjab and Haryana in deplorable conditions.

From all the four respective locations, the migrant workers were sent back home, the Hon’ble Court ordered the respondents to keep all the phone lines available at all times for the distressed migrant workers and simplify the registration process as well.  Also if any migrant workers are found to be stranded anywhere in the state, they should be immediately transported to their native place by the respondent authorities.
