Kattimada Adivasi Bhoomi Samrakshana Samithi Vs Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Tribes, Min. for Revenue, District Collector and ITDP Officer Background 50 landless Tribal families belonging to Paniya, Kattunaikka and Adiya tribes were given land in Thariyode village in Vythiri taluk as per the government program to rehabilitate the landless tribals of Wayanad in 1978. Each family was given land from 50 to 85 cents and they had been living and cultivating in the land till 1994. In 1994 the neighbouring areas were acquired for Kuttiyadi Augmentation scheme. But the land of the 50 tribals was not acquired. As a result the area became isolated without any access of transport, school, and medical facilities, ration shop so and so forth. Due to this the tribals could not live there any longer and they were compelled to flee from that land. Later on in 2000 the same land of tribals were notified as Ecologically Fragile Land. This was without paying any compensation to the 50 tribal families. The tribals again become land less and they approached various government departments seeking land, rehabilitation, compensation etc., but till date none of their demands are met by the government. Meanwhile the tribals formed a committee to fight for their demands and the Convener of the committee approached SLIC and SLIC filed petitions before the Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Tribes, Min. for Revenue, District Collector and ITDP Officer, Kalpetta.
