Bombay HC asked BMC to consider setting up a permanent medical board in its hospitals to deal with medical termination of pregnancy cases. A bench of Justices Abhay Oka and Mahesh Sonak was hearing a plea seeking permission for termination of pregnancy when it asked BMC's advocate to take instructions on whether such boards can be constituted in civic hospitals. "We want the municipal corporation to set up a permanent medical board,'' said Justice Oka. The judges said petitions are regularly filed in HC seeking permission to terminate pregnancy beyond the permissible 20-week limit. The court directed JJ Hospital to constitute a board in nearly every case to examine the petitioner and give its opinion on whether MTP should be allowed. "We are putting JJ Hospital under pressure,'' said Justice Oka. They said it was getting difficult for patients from the suburbs to travel to JJ.
