National Transgender Day

    





National Legal Services Authority v. Union of India is a landmark decision by the Supreme Court of India on April 15th, 2014 which declared transgender people the 'third gender', affirmed that the fundamental rights granted under the Constitution of India will be equally applicable to them, and gave them the right to self-identification of their gender as male, female or third gender.

This judgment has been distinguished as a major step towards gender equality in India` Moreover, the court also held that because transgender people were treated as socially and economically backward classes, they will be granted reservations in admissions to educational institutions and jobs.

Since then National Transgender Day is celebrated on April 15th every year by Association of Transgender and Hijra Board. SLIC was invited to be a part of the event on April 15th,2021 at ICCR,Kolkata where Aparajita Bose,Aishwarya Adhikari and Venkatesh Kodukula were felicitated on behalf of SLIC for being a constant support to the LGBTQIA+ community.
