I D Gill

Manipur It is difficult to refer to I D Gill, in the past tense. His work is still all around us. His determination to be a lawyer and work for the hill people is what drives us in identifying the next generation of SLIC lawyers. Affectionately called Gill, his sole objective was to learn and learn and learn and then go back to his people in the hills and work among them. Gill began work at the Delhi office of SLIC and after a year of training moved to Nagaland to assist with the work of the Nagaland unit. Subsequently he moved to Manipur to go back to the hill people and work with them. Gill passed away in February of 2017, due to cardiac arrest. During the period of two years that he was associated with Socio-Legal Information Centre, Gill undertook remarkable cases, whether it was assisting Colin Gonsalves his mentor in the case of Irom Sharmila, who was being prosecuted for attempt to suicide for having gone on an indefinite fast or for that matter seeking the removal of armed forces from schools in the State of Manipur after they had occupied schools to camp in for indefinite stretches on the ground that it affected right to education of children.
