SLIC founder Colin Gonsalves among 2017 Right Livelihood Award Laureates

September 26th, 2017: Socio-Legal Information Centre founder and Senior Supreme Court Counsel Colin Gonsalves has been announced a Laureate of the 2017 Right Livelihood Award, widely known as the ‘Alternative’ Nobel Prize.
Colin Gonsalves has been recognised by the jury “for his tireless and innovative use of public interest litigation over three decades to secure fundamental human rights for India’s most marginalised and vulnerable citizens”.
The announcement was made today at the International Press Centre at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs by Ole von Uexkull, Executive Director of the Right Livelihood Award Foundation, and Maina Kiai, Jury member and former UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom resolution image of C of peaceful assembly and of association.
Upon receiving the news, Gonsalves commented: “I am both humbled and privileged by the Award. It comes at a time when India is going through a dark period and human rights activists are under siege. The platform the Foundation provides will help us strengthen democratic resistance at this critical stage.”

Colin Gonsalves awarded by Centre for Reproductive Rights

Dr. Colin Gonsalves, the founder of Socio-Legal Information Centre was presented with the Honour for “Pioneering and Exemplary Leadership in Advancing Women’s Reproductive Rights and Social Justice in India” by the Centre for Reproductive Rights. The honor, which was presented at their Annual Gala on 27th October’ 2015, was also presented to Sharon Malone (Obstetrician, gynecologist and public figure) and The Honorable Eric H. Holder, Jr.

SLIC awarded India NGO Awards 2013 in the ‘Large Category’

The Resource Alliance announced the winners of the India NGO Awards 2012/13 at a glittering ceremony held in New Delhi. The winners were chosen based by an independent jury who selected the NGOs on their demonstration of best practices of impact, scalability and replicability, innovation and sustainability in their programmes, and in creative and successful resource mobilisation.

SLIC receives 2013 MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation awarded Socio-Legal Information Centre (SLIC) the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions for its contributions to reproductive rights advocacy in India. The award, which was announced today, recognizes 13 nonprofit organizations around the world who have demonstrated creativity and impact.

Colin Gonsalves receives the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice, 2010

Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice 2010 was also conferred upon Colin Gonsalves, a senior advocate of Supreme Court of India for legal aid in addressing human rights.

SLIC founder Colin Gonsalves awarded Doctorate by the University of Middlesex, UK

Colin Gonsalves, Founder, SLIC was presented with the award of Doctor of the University, honoris causa, by the University of Middlesex, UK. Gonsalves was honoured for his outstanding contribution to society and path-defining works and achievements in the field of humanitarian laws on July five at the Middlesex University Business School graduation ceremony.

Colin Gonsalves conferred with Distinguished Alumnus Award by IIT, Bombay, 2010

Mr Colin H Gonsalves, Founder, Socio-Legal Information Centre, was honoured by IIT, Bombay with Distinguished Alumnus Award 2010. Mr Colin H. Gonsalves, is a B.Tech (1975) from the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay.Mr Gonsalves began working as a civil engineer, but was drawn to the law through union work and concerns over labour issues and exploitation. In 1979, he started studying law at night school.

Colin Gonsalves awarded International Human Rights Award, American Bar Association, 2004

International Human Rights Award, 2004 presented to Colin Gonsalves by the Section of Litigation, American Bar Association “in recognition of extraordinary contributions to the causes of human rights, the rule of law, and promotion of access to justice.”
